I am a loyal customer of BMW for over 20 years and am presently, owner of a BMW 520 d Touring (Model April 2007) which I use as family car. This is one of two BMWs which I own (the other is a 7 Series BMW).
We live in a Villa in Lennestadt-Maumke and we have a 7 cars garage where my cars are always parked. My BMW 520d car has been regularly serviced by BMW Service and I have a “Service Record Book”. The car is kept in immaculate condition and has run ONLY about 32,000 KM.
I must report a very serious incident that happened on November 04, 2013.
I was driving to the station with my wife and children (in a 70 KM speed zone road), when my BMW 520 d, suddenly developed a catastrophic electrical malfunction. in traffic. Suddenly, without warning, power in the car completely shut down. My vehicles electronic control system issued a frenzy of alerts and interrupted function of several sub-system including the indicator lights, head lamps, etc. What was worst was that the ‘suspension’ of rear part of the car completely collapsed to the ground, leaving me with no option but, to stop the car in the middle of the road.
My family and I could have been involved in a serious accident. We are still not recovered from the shock!
I had immediately towed the car to BMW Service Centre Autohaus Kaltenbach in Lennestadt, Germany who inspected the car and affirmed that water had entered the car through the sunroof drainage system and flooded the compartment housing the control systems, causing the sudden malfunction.
Also, I am told that the "panoramic" sunroof in mine, as in several BMW models, is defectively designed, allowing water to come in and cause damage.
Further, the defective "panoramic" sunroof definitely seems to me, not only as a safety hazard due to the flooding. I understand from the BMW Service Centre that both to diagnose and repair the damages caused by the sunroof defect will be "exorbitant” - as high as Five Thousand Euros, or more.
The BMW Service centre mentioned to me that the whole cassette - where certain vital electrical components known as SDARS, RDC, and PDC modules, are located in the lowest part of my vehicles' trunk may need to be changed.
The letter from BMW is attached for your ready reference stating that my vehicle is inoperable and driving it poses a serious safety risk.
I must add that the sunroof defect in the class vehicles which I unfortunately own, has resulted in my vehicle having diminished value, thereby depriving me of the benefit of the vehicle (and its value) that I paid for.
I may also add that sadly, the “water intrusion" as a result of the “panoramic sunroof defect" is causing my confidence in BMW to diminish as a safe and reliable family car.
As this clearly seems like a design fault, I requested BMW - wrote to no less than the Chairman of the company to pay for the repairs or, reimburse me after I complete the repairs by an authorized BMW dealer. I had NO RESPONSE from the Chairman or the company. I am now about to seek legal redress.
SHAME ON BMW !
